Focus Gallery: “Divine Light” Solo Show by Laura Clerici
Main Gallery: New April Members Exhibit
Dates: April 3-28, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, April 7, 5-8pm
Arlington, VA – During April, Gallery Underground features the fascinating art of Laura Clerici in “Divine Light,” a solo show of devotional icons. In her luminous, deeply saturated and colorful paintings, Laura employs the Orthodox tradition of “writing” an icon with gold leaf gilding and tempera paints handmade with egg yolk, wine and dry pigments such as cinnabar, indigo and ocher. Her color is then applied in multiple layers on a wooden board, which has been carefully prepared with cloth and gesso.
The artist will give three talks about this work at Gallery Underground on Monday, April 17, from 4:15-5pm; Saturday, April 22, from 12-1pm; and Thursday, April 27, from 4:15-5pm.
In addition to a new all-media Members Show, our featured artist is Debbie Taylor, a local painter whose lovely, loose style focuses on landscape and nature subjects. The artist says, “Painting guides me in looking at the world with intention… my style could be described as impressionistic, and at times semi-abstract, and this changes as I grow as an artist.”
Gallery Underground anchors the visual arts component of Crystal City’s Art Underground, and serves as the main gallery space for the 150-member Arlington Artists Alliance. In addition to its monthly rotating exhibitions, Gallery Underground hosts a variety of community events, like lunchtime paint-ins, monthly Painting Uncorked classes, and dance and musical performances. The gallery has been voted “Best Art Gallery” in Arlington Magazine’s “Best of Arlington” survey, and was selected “Best Gallery, Crystal City” by Washingtonian Magazine.
Gallery Underground’s monthly opening receptions are part of Crystal City’s Art Underground “First Friday” events where you can also jam at ArtJamz Underground, take a stroll along the Fotowalk, see what’s happening at TechShop, and catch Synetic Theater’s current show, The Hunchback of Notredame (runs May 10 – June 11).
