Opening Reception and Meet the Artists: Friday, Sep 2, 5-7pm
Free and open to the public
Arlington, VA – September is Barry Barnett Keith’s month. Last year at this time, Keith’s solo show, Land and Sea 2018, was opening at Gallery Underground, and we were introduced to his beautiful landscape work. This year, we are fortunate to be able to welcome him back, and to experience a whole new body of work, Draftsman, which will be opening September 2 at Gallery Underground. Keith, in addition to being an accomplished artist, is also a novelist and art teacher. His work is more than a simple translation of visual representation. The medium and method of painting is as important to the work as the subject itself. As an educator, Keith uses his skills to translate his landscapes to an immersive learning experience, and the message of his work is lovely and gratifyingly challenging.
These landscapes and portrait paintings done within the last year show how Keith has branched out into more involved, demanding, detailed work. A native of Alexandria, VA, Keith’s goal in landscape painting is to translate what he sees and have the painting be indicative of the medium of painting, rather than paint a photographic picture with brushes. He has taught the arts in the Prince Georges County Maryland Public school system for fifteen years- twelve years at Suitland High School and three in elementary school. He is presently the Lead Art Teacher at Mattaponi Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD and Rose Valley Elementary School in Fort Washington, MD.
After you’ve seen Keith’s work in the Focus Gallery, stop in the main gallery where we present new member works for September including paintings, sculpture, jewelry and metalwork, glass, wood and ceramics, mixed media and photography.
Come meet Keith and our other artists at Gallery Underground’s opening reception on Friday, September 2 from 5-7pm. The reception is free and open to the public.
