Arlington, VA – “Go with the Flow,” a solo show showcasing new work by Anya Getter, a mixed media artist known for her boldly colored, whimsical, introspective art. This show explores the fluid magic of acrylic paint. The artist says: “there is only so much control an artist can exert over the fluid medium, so part of the process is to embrace the unexpected and literally go with the flow. I had to surrender to the will of the paint, a scary yet beautiful thing.”
Also featured along with new works by Gallery members is painter Sandi Parker whose acrylic abstracts are richly textured, often including other media such as graphite pencil, oil crayon and collage, or scratching to reveal layers of color beneath and provide energy and movement. “My abstract work is influenced by the patina found on urban walls, and I frequently include graffiti in my work,” she says. Sandi has been accepted into and won awards at many local and national juried shows, held a solo show of her abstract works, “Urban Edge,” in 2016, and was commissioned in 2016 to paint two abstracts for a large-scale permanent public art installation as part of the “Art Walls” project in Crystal City, Arlington, VA, on view at 12th St. and Army-Navy Drive.
First Fridays (first Friday of every month), Gallery Underground hosts an art reception FREE and open to all from 5-8pm. This members’ art gallery features paintings, sculpture, clay work, jewelry, mixed media and photography; each month the entire gallery changes its exhibit and presents a new show from its talented local members. Gallery Underground’s monthly opening receptions are part of Crystal City’s Art Underground “First Friday” events where you can also jam at ArtJamz Underground, take a stroll along the Fotowalk, and catch a show at Synetic Theater.
Gallery Underground anchors the visual arts component of Crystal City’s Art Underground, and serves as the main gallery space for the 150-member Arlington Artists Alliance. In addition to its monthly rotating exhibitions, Gallery Underground hosts a variety of community events, like lunchtime paint-ins, monthly Painting Uncorked classes, and dance and musical performances. The gallery has been voted “Best Art Gallery” in Arlington Magazine’s “Best of Arlington” survey, and was selected “Best Gallery, Crystal City” by Washingtonian Magazine.
