“VIENNA GOLD: Inspired by Klimt” Art Exhibition
Dates: October 1-26, 2018
Opening Reception and Meet the Artists: Friday, October 5, 5-8pm
Arlington, VA – “VIENNA GOLD: Inspired by Klimt” is a special exhibit at Gallery Underground during October. This sumptuous show features the art of Jackie Afram, Elizabeth Hudgins, Kat Jamieson, Linda Maldonado, Elise Ritter, Anna Schalk, and Deborah Taylor.
Just as the Impressionists put Paris on the map, innovative painter Gustav Klimt and his fellow artists did the same for Vienna. This year, 2018, Vienna and other European capitals are celebrating a 100th year anniversary tribute to Klimt and his Viennese Modernist colleagues.
The inspiration for this show, Klimt led this important art movement, which rebelled against the classical style of painting prevalent in Europe at the time, and set new standards for portraiture, landscape paintings, and abstraction.
Come to experience art that is beautiful, provocative, and lavish…unlike paintings and jewelry you will see elsewhere.
As an added feature of this exhibit, participating artists will give talk/demos on three Saturdays during the show’s run:
Saturday, October 6
11am — Celebrating Gustav Klimt, featuring a tour through Vienna’s Art Museums – Elise Ritter
The Viennese Modernist movement includes evocative landscapes, portraiture, non-representational and representational elements, and decorative forms, as well as Art Nouveau, Symbolism, and Ravenna-inspired mosaic color explorations…often accented with gold. Contributing artist Elise Ritter recently returned from Vienna, and will discuss paintings by Klimt and his colleagues from the Belvedere palace, the Leopold museum, the Secession building, the Kunsthistorische museum, and the MAK (Museum of applied art).
1pm — Painting With Oil Markers and Bars on Stone Paper – Jackie Afram
Oil bars, markers and stone paper are made for each other: the bars and markers slide so smoothly that you draw and paint at the same time. During this demonstration, Jackie will create a landscape or still life using these intriguing materials.
Saturday, October 13
11am — Celebrating Gustav Klimt – Elise Ritter (see above description for details)
1pm — Layer, Shapes and Marks – Anna Schalk
A multimedia artist who paints in water media, oil and cold wax on paper, canvas or wood, Anna will focus on movement as she addresses each subject which determines both the medium and the support surface. Using layers of color and shapes with strong strokes to allow the rhythm to engage the viewer’s eyes, each painting reflects Anna’s own journey into mindfulness and the desire to engage in “what is” in the moment.
Saturday, October 20
11am — Patterns and Overlays in Klimt’s Artwork – Linda Maldonado
Explore the rich vocabulary of symbols and patterns used by Gustav Klimt in his art and how it has inspired our “Vienna Gold” show artists. We’ll examine details in Klimt’s paintings that sometimes elude the hasty observer yet reward the patient viewer, and see how our artists have used their own approach to creating patterns and symbols.
1pm — Explore the Vibrant World of Alcohol Ink – Deborah Taylor
Interested in learning about the fun and colorful effects possible with alcohol inks? Discover this exciting medium with painter Deborah Taylor who will explore several techniques to create beautiful small paintings on non-porous surfaces (Yupo, tile, etc.).
Along with new works by Gallery members, also featured is member artist Carol Waite.
