Leigh was born and raised in a small town in Ohio and learned to love art in high school where she won first place for her pencil portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt. She moved on to oils and spent many years wrestling with that media with some success. After moving to Washington, DC in 1968, she joined several art organizations and studied for almost six decades with local and nationally-recognized art instructors. She discovered watercolors when she traveled to Provence on a watercolor workshop and knew she needed to seriously dip her toes into that media. She had no idea at the time where that would lead. Now she paints exclusively in watercolor. Inspired by her travels around the world and the breathtaking scenery she encountered, she paints landscapes, architecture and interiors. Her work has been frequently accepted in juried art exhibitions and has won numerous awards. She is a juried and board member of The Potomac Valley Watercolorists and Gallery Underground in Arlington, Virginia. She is also a member of The Art League and Gallery 75 in Alexandria, Virginia and the Arlington Artists Alliance. Her solo exhibition in Washington, DC was one of the high points in her artistic career. One of her paintings was featured in the publication: “Potomac Valley Watercolorists: Celebrating 40 Years – 1974-2014.”
What I love about watercolor painting is the paint itself. The way the colors can be subtle or strong, light or dark, transparent or opaque. The way some paints separate into two different colors and others blend together to make gorgeous combinations. Just playing with the paints is mystical, fascinating and fun. I want my paintings to tell a story and resonate with viewers. I strive to pull the viewer into my interior paintings and become a part of the scene. I hope my landscapes of places I’ve visited around the world will create a desire to be in those locations. Being part of the painting brings life to it.
