During April, the Arlington Artists Alliance is proud to present Featured Artist James Bellows. Woodworker James Bellows utilizes reclaimed wood from eco-friendly lumber in Catharpin, VA which he evolves into bowls and platters, each produced one at a time by hand. Bellows does the rough work with a chainsaw, then moves to grinders and sanding for the end product. The character, shape and individuality of each piece attempts to reveal nature’s beauty one bowl at a time.
Also presented in our Focus Gallery is “Out of Place,” our member show featuring works evoking places, real and imagined, that evoke a sense of being slightly out of place from the norm, including paintings, photography, sculpture, glass, metalwork and woodworking.
These exhibitions are free and open to the public and run April 1-26, 2019 with the Opening Reception on Friday, April 5th, 5-7pm.
Located in the Crystal City Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, VA 22202, Gallery Underground showcases the work of established and emerging regional artists. It is one of two large gallery spaces for the 200-member Arlington Artists Alliance; the other is Gallery Clarendon at 2800 Clarendon Blvd. in Arlington.
Each month the gallery changes its entire exhibit and presents a new show from its talented members in many forms: paintings, sculpture, glass and ceramic work, jewelry, mixed media and photography. Gallery Underground anchors the visual arts component of Crystal City’s Art Underground, and on “First Fridays” (the first Friday of every month), hosts an art reception free and open to all from 5-8pm, along with Crystal City’s Art Underground “First Friday” events where you can also jam at ArtJamz Underground, take a stroll along the Fotowalk, and catch a show at Synetic Theater.
In addition to its monthly rotating exhibitions, Gallery Underground hosts a variety of community events, like lunchtime paint-ins and dance and musical performances. The gallery has been voted “Best Art Gallery” in Arlington Magazine’s “Best of Arlington” survey, and was selected “Best Gallery, Crystal City” by Washingtonian Magazine. Gallery Underground is sponsored by the Arlington Artists Alliance (AAA), in partnership with the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID), and JBG Smith.
