Juried by Allen Bentley
During April, the Arlington Artists Alliance is proud to present the National Juried Show – “RISK”.
Fortune favors the bold – an ancient expression, and one that especially applies to artists. Gallery Underground invites artists working in all media to submit works depicting or representing risk. These can take the form of either literal depictions of taking risks, or more figurative demonstrations of the artist’s personal risk-taking in their subject matter, medium or technique. For this exhibition, artists will submit a paragraph explaining how their submitted works represent the theme; these paragraphs will be displayed next to each accepted piece.
About the Juror:
Artist Allen Bentley received his Master’s of Fine Art from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000 and his Bachelor’s of Fine Art from Western Carolina University in 1996. Bentley was represented by the Bridgette Mayer Gallery in Philadelphia from 2001 to 2013. He has exhibited across the country, with solo exhibitions in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, and San Diego. He has shown in the Philadelphia International Airport and in Artworks at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 2009, Bentley had his first solo museum show at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts in Wilmington, DE. He teaches Figure Drawing and Drawing at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD and serves as chair of the Christopher Lyon Scholarship selection committee at the University of Pennsylvania.
These exhibitions are free and open to the public and run May 1st– May 26th, 2019 with the Opening Reception on Friday, May 3rd, 5-7pm.
Located in the Crystal City Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, VA 22202, Gallery Underground showcases the work of established and emerging regional artists. It is one of two large gallery spaces for the 200-member Arlington Artists Alliance; the other is Gallery Clarendon at 2800 Clarendon Blvd. in Arlington.
Each month the gallery changes its entire exhibit and presents a new show from its talented members in many forms: paintings, sculpture, glass and ceramic work, jewelry, mixed media and photography. Gallery Underground anchors the visual arts component of Crystal City’s Art Underground, and on “First Fridays” (the first Friday of every month), hosts an art reception free and open to all from 5-8pm, along with Crystal City’s Art Underground “First Friday” events where you can also jam at ArtJamz Underground, take a stroll along the Fotowalk, and catch a show at Synetic Theater.
In addition to its monthly rotating exhibitions, Gallery Underground hosts a variety of community events, like lunchtime paint-ins and dance and musical performances. The gallery has been voted “Best Art Gallery” in Arlington Magazine’s “Best of Arlington” survey, and was selected “Best Gallery, Crystal City” by Washingtonian Magazine. Gallery Underground is sponsored by the Arlington Artists Alliance (AAA), in partnership with the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID), and JBG Smith.
